At Kara Technologies, we are deeply committed to accessibility and inclusion, and so we are proud to announce our active role within the Coalition for Sign Language Equity in Technology (CoSET) - the organization instrumental in advocating for the rights and needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities in the technology sector for AI and Sign Languages. Two employees from Kara's team, both of whom are Deaf, have significant roles in the Co-SET. One holds a leadership position, while the other actively represents Kara as a member.
The CoSET organization is made up of Deaf subject matter experts, Deaf industry leaders, and sign language interpreters from several countries. The leaders and members have been tirelessly working towards a future where AI and technology serves everyone, including those who communicate with sign language.
Kara’s involvement with CoSET is an extension of our mission to create a world where technology is formed by the Deaf, for the Deaf, and with the Deaf.
One of the most significant initiatives by CoSET is the development with the Interpreting SAFE AI Task Force of a guidance paper for S.A.F.E AI (Safe, Accountable, Fair, and Ethical).
Kara’s Deaf team was one of more than a dozen CoSET members who helped co-author the Guidance in collaboration with spoken language interpreters. The Guidance paper sets forth principles for interpreting agencies to follow in order to encourage the responsible and equitable use of AI in technology. We wholeheartedly endorse these principles, which resonate with Kara’s own core values: accessibility, innovation, inclusion, empowerment, and augmentation (supplementing services, not replacing).
The #DeafSafeAI principles are a comprehensive framework for creating technology solutions that protect user privacy, ensure accountability, promote fairness, and uphold ethical standards for industries, businesses, and communicators. At Kara Technologies, these principles shape how we develop our products and services, ensuring our solutions are truly accessible and beneficial for all.
Here are some of their key principles that we align with and promote in our work:
Autonomy
We strive to design our technology in a manner that respects and protects user privacy. We understand the importance of data security and confidentiality, and we ensure our solutions adhere to the highest standards of data protection.
Accountability
Fairness
Ethical Use
Kara’s support CoSET is a testament to our commitment to making the world more inclusive. We invite you to join us in advocating with them for sign language equity in technology.
Together, we can ensure that technology serves everyone, making our world more connected, inclusive, and equitable.
